Well I'm not a fan of New York Rangers' agitator Sean Avery at all but seeing the below video of him making fun of Pittsburgh Penguins Maxime Talbot after a small scrum where Talbot flung his arms at Avery was hilarious.
If you missed the Montreal Canadiens vs San Jose Sharks game on Thursday then you missed another gutless and cheap play by Maxim Lapierre. He pushed Sharks' forward Scott Nichol from behind into the boards after a breakaway chance. You can see that incident below. Lapierre was suspended for four games for that hit.
With the Ducks signing Jonas Hiller to a four year $18 million contract extension you got the feeling that Jean-Sebastien Giguere would probably be traded or bought out. This morning it was announced that the Toronto Maple Leafs made two big trades. The first trade was between the Leafs and the Calgary Flames. The Flames traded hard hitting defenseman Dion Phaneuf, forward Fredrik Sjostrom, and defenseman Keith Aulie to the Maple Leafs for forwards Matt Stajan, Jamal Mayers, Niklas Hagman, and defenseman Ian White. The second trade was between the Leafs and the Anaheim Ducks. The Ducks traded goalie Jean-Sebastien Giguere to the Leafs for goalie Vesa Toskala and forward Jason Blake.
I think the Leafs got the best in both deals as they're getting Phaneuf who is one of the best hitters in the league, a good offensive defenseman, and even though he is having a down season I think he will improve on his play. The Leafs though did give up a lot of their offense in these two trades by sending Stajan, Hagman, and Blake elsewhere. Getting Giguere definitely improves their goaltending as Toskala has been awful. I guess we'll have to wait and watch and see who ends up with the better of these trades.
In Saturday's Penguins-Blackhawks game Matt Cooke got a taste of his own medicine with a questionable hit from Duncan Keith. Sooner or later we all knew someone would get Cooke back for something he did. It's funny seeing Cooke cry to the refs after the hit since he does the same exact things, if not worse to other players. So Matt Cooke you got what was coming to you, shut the fuck up and live with it you pansy. If you continue to play the gutless cheap way you play this will happen more times to you. Too bad you weren't hurt as some of the other players you have injured during your cheap career.
Watch the Keith hit on Cooke below and also I included the cheap headshot to Rangers' Artem Anisimov in which Cooke got suspended for two games, and the incident where he hit Ilya Kovalchuk from behind and then they fought. Even Don Cherry called out Cooke for that cheapshot incident with Kovalchuk. The Penguins TV announcers are so bad and stupid, it's unbelievable how they defend these cheapshots.

Another controversy in the NHL happened on Saturday that you've probably seen by now. If you haven't seen it yet, watch it below. Philadelphia Flyers' Dan Carcillo one punch KO'd Washington Capitals' Matt Bradley. The controversy isn't the KO but how the fight started. There are some who say Carcillo sucker punched Bradley and others are saying that they were going to fight and Carcillo just got the jump on him. Carcillo was given 2 minutes for cross checking, 2 minutes for instigating, 5 minutes for fighting, 10 minute misconduct and a game misconduct. So were those penalties enough punishment for Carcillo? Well today the NHL suspended Carcillo for 4 games. Flyers general manager Paul Holmgren said on Sunday that he did not agree with the decision, and I don't either.
If you watch the video Bradley drops his right glove and is going to fight Carcillo, but Carcillo lands that one punch that drops him before he has a chance to throw a punch. Yes it is instigating by Carcillo because he already had a glove dropped but I don't think Carcillo should have been suspended for this. If you remember back to last season's playoffs, in the Bruins-Hurricanes series, there was something similar but far worse in my opinion. Scott Walker sucker punched Aaron Ward and Walker only got fined and not suspended. I don't see how the Carcillo incident is worse than the Walker incident that warrants this suspension. So basically Carcillo gets suspended for instigating and KO'ing a player in a fight. Let me know your thoughts on what you think about the incident and the suspension.
It's now November, a month into the NHL season and wow so many injuries to players. Here's a quick list of some of the notable players that are out with an injury: Thrashers Ilya Kovalchuk, Bruins Marc Savard and Milan Lucic, Hurricanes Eric Staal, Avalanche Darcy Tucker, Stars Jere Lehtinen, Red Wings Johan Franzen, Oilers Sheldon Souray, Panthers David Booth, Canadiens Andrei Markov, Predators Jason Arnott, Devils Paul Martin, Islanders Trent Hunter, Senators Jason Spezza, Flyers Daniel Briere, Flyers Simon Gagne, Penguins Evgeni Malkin, Penguins Sergei Gonchar, Blues, Andy McDonald, Canucks Roberto Luongo, Canucks Daniel Sedin, and Capitals Alex Ovechkin. Wow that's like an All-Star team right there. Speaking of injuries Maple Leafs Phil Kessel is supposedly making his debut with the Leafs against the Lightning on Tuesday.
With all of the injuries mentioned above, some of those were caused by hits that have been questionable. There have been some suspensions already this season and also some non-suspensions which maybe should have happened. On October 23rd, Hurricanes Tuomo Ruutu hit Avalanche Darcy Tucker from behind against the boards making Tucker hit his head against the glass. Ruutu was thrown out of the game and Tucker was taken off on a stretcher. Tucker was later diagnosed with a concussion. Ruutu was suspended for two games.
On October 24th, Flyers Mike Richards hit Panthers David Booth unconscious and gave Booth a concussion with a hit to the head in open ice. Richards was not suspended for the hit but he was thrown out of the game for the hit.
Also on October 24th, Stars agitator Steve Ott went low and flipped Blues Carlo Colaiacovo in the air. Ott didn't receive a penalty but was later suspended for two games for that hit.
On October 25th, Kings Rob Scuderi went really low on Blue Jackets Jason Chimera sending him up and over Scuderi almost looking like he may break his neck but fortunately only had a cut on his face. Scuderi was fined for the hit.
Yesterday Anaheim Ducks defenseman James Wisniewski was suspended for two games for his hit to Phoenix Coyotes captain Shane Doan. There was no penalty on the play.
What do you think about these hits? Did they deserve suspensions or fines or nothing? I personally thought that Ruutu should have got more games, and Richards and Scuderi should have been suspended.
The NHL three stars for the month of October are: first star is Colorado Avalanche goalie Craig Anderson, second star is Washington Capitals winger Alex Ovechkin, and third star is Phoenix Coyotes goalie Ilya Bryzgalov. Craig Anderson went 10-2-2 with 2.04 GAA and a 93.9% save percentage. Alex Ovechkin leads the league in goals with 14 goals. Ilya Bryzgalov went 8-3-0 with a 1.78 GAA and a 93% save percentage. Three players who are definitely helping their teams with the records that they have. I don't think anyone expected Colorado or Phoenix to have the starts that they have had but their goalies have played great.
It's been a slow start for some teams like the Islanders, Maple Leafs, Panthers, Wild, and Ducks while some teams have started out good like the Rangers, Penguins, Blackhawks, Flames, and Kings. Some of the surprise teams in a good way are Senators (3-2-0, 6 points in 5 games as of yesterday), Tampa Bay (2-1-2, 6 points in 5 games as of yesterday), Blue Jackets (3-1-0, 6 points in 4 games as of yesterday), Avalanche (3-1-1, 7 points in 5 games as of yesterday), Kings (4-1-0, 8 points in 5 games as of yesterday). And some other teams with high expectations have struggled at the start such as the Bruins (2-3-0, 4 points in 5 games as of yesterday), Hurricanes (2-3-0, 4 points in 5 games as of yesterday), Red Wings (2-2-0, 4 points in 4 games as of yesterday), and the Ducks (2-2-1, 5 points in 5 games as of yesterday).
Here's a funny controversy having to do with Montreal Canadiens' Georges Laraque. All credit goes to Puck Daddy for posting about this as I didn't hear about this until today. Laraque appears in a commercial for Octane 7.0, an energy drink that combines 80 mg of caffeine with 7-percent alcohol content. The video contains women with tight and small clothing on if you know what I mean. Check out the video below, I guess it's NSFW so be careful. :) The controversy is that some think it is sexist. What are your thoughts? Good for Laraque to be in a commercial with some hot women and to look like an All-Star with those stick handling skills against the women in the commercial cause that will be the only time he'll look that good with a hockey stick.
Over the weekend we saw another bloody fight including Bruins forward Milan Lucic, as he opened up Hurricanes defenseman Jay Harrison. Harrison (6'4" 211 lbs) picked the fight because Lucic (6'4" 220 lbs) finished his check on him. So all you Lucic-haters out there saying Lucic only fights smaller guys or non-fighters, well this proves you wrong. So who is going to fight Lucic next? Lucic's last two fights he has busted his opponent open and I think it wouldn't be smart to get into a fight with him. You can watch the Lucic-Harrison fight in the video below.

The NHL preseason has had quite a lot of fights this year but that's what happens every preseason. Young players and no-name players have to make a name for themselves and get noticed any way they can, so some get into fights. Some in the media against fighting in hockey are already going nuts about fighting. If you don't like it, then don't watch it, go watch baseball with those bench clearing brawls. A perfect example of why fighting should remain in the game is the Milan Lucic-Chris Neil fight from Friday night. Neil took a run at Bruins star center Marc Savard and the Bruins didn't like it. It's the preseason, so if you're going to run around like that you're going to have to answer the bell sometimes. So Lucic challenged Neil at the faceoff circle and they dropped the gloves and had a really good fight. You can watch that fight in this post below. As you know I don't have a problem with fighting in hockey as it is needed to police the game.
I know hockey fans are pumped! The NHL regular season starts this Thursday (October 1st) with two games on VS (Capitals vs Bruins and Sharks vs Avalanche) and two games on CBC (Canadiens vs Maple Leafs and Canucks vs Flames). I feel bad for those hockey fans that have DirectTV and can't see the VS channel. Hopefully that gets worked out.

I wanted to let everyone know I have posted some fight pictures from this preseason so far on the site that you can check out and I'm working on adding past seasons fight pictures on the site too. There have been lots of fights in preseason games so far. Last night we saw the Boston Bruins and Toronto Maple Leafs go at it with four fights (watch them all below, courtesy of dafoomie on YouTube).
I also want to send my condolences to the Cusick family as we all lost a great member of the hockey family. Fred Cusick passed away on Tuesday. I will always remember his voice as I saw some Bruins games back on WSBK TV-38 (Bruins fans will remember this), and he brought excitement to games that most broadcasters don't do today in my opinion. He will forever be remembered. If you never heard him, search for old Bruins videos on YouTube, you'll be sure to find something, probably a hockey fight but hey that's good enough. :)

Monday night was the first day of NHL preseason action. The only game was the New York Islanders vs the Vancouver Canucks. Not a surprise that there were four fights in the game considering it is a preseason game and players try to make the coach notice them by doing anything to make the roster. Ex-Bruin forward Jeremy Reich got into the action, dropping the gloves twice. His fight against Canucks not so big tough guy Rick Rypien was a good one (included below courtesy of hockeyfights.com). I have to give the Reich-Rypien fight a draw. The other three fights in the game were: Jeremy Reich vs Ron Petrovicky, Tim Jackman vs Guillaume Desbiens, and Andy Sutton vs Rick Rypien. Rypien sure is a good fighter (just watch his fight against the bigger Sutton) and I hope he can stay healthy for a whole season with the Canucks this season.
